1. Kok Tobe:
The first place to visit in Almaty is Kok Tobe, a mountain near the city with a height of around 1100 meters. Due to its entertaining activities and stunning scenery, it is liked by both tourists and locals, It is considered the city’s primary attraction because it provides a blend of amusement and nature that is appealing for all ages.

There are two ways to reach this place: one is by car (taxi), and the second is by cable car. The cable car costs you 3000 Tenge one way and 5000 Tenge two way. From up there, you will get stunning views of the city. This place reminds me of Damn e Koh, a mountain top near Islamabad (Pakistan), from where you can get beautiful views of the city. There are a lot of souvenir shops from which you can buy some local products and a couple of beautiful cafes as well, where you can sit and enjoy the hustle and bustle of the people with a stunning view of the city.

2. Medeu and Symbulak:
The second places to visit in Almaty are Medeu and Symbulak. You can go there by taxi, as it is almost 18 km away from the city center. The second option is to book a day trip to both of these places, which are actually at the same place. I booked the second option (a day trip), which cost me around 24000 tenge (53 USD). It was a full-day trip with lunch and all tickets.
Medeu was actually the site of a dam, but now you will find a big skating rink there, surrounded by beautiful mountains and views. It is famous for its sports and ice skating activities, which go on all year.

Only a short ride away is Shymbulak, with its thrilling slopes and breathtaking landscape. Luckily, I went there during the winter, and wow, what a beautiful, entertaining, and thrilling experience it was. First, you have to buy a ticket for the cable car, which has three different stops. Now it’s up to you how much you want to cover, so all tickets have different prices (I’ve included a ticket in my day trip). The highest ticket price is 2500 tenge, in that you can go to the last stop in a cabin-shaped cable car with glasses all around so you can enjoy the beautiful view. You have to hop off at every station, and from there, you have to change the cable car, which will take you to the next level.

There is much more. If you want to do ice skating, then this place is a paradise for you. It doesn’t matter if you are a beginner or a professional, you can do ice skating here. And what I saw there is that people of all ages and genders are doing and enjoying ice skating there.

And if you do not know ice skating like me, no problem, you can still enjoy a long cable car ride. At each stop, you can see some amazing views, and at each stop, you will find all the basic facilities like cafes, rest benches, and toilets. So, whether you are an ice skater or not, this is a must-visit place in Almaty, a place whose beauty and entertainment will never be forgotten.

This cathedral has breathtaking architecture that perfectly portrays the culture and history of the city. Completed in 1907, the building of the church is one of the highest wooden structures in the world. The Ascension Cathedral provides a pleasant haven and an insight into Almaty’s rich history. And when you step inside the cathedral, it amazes you even more with its unique and beautiful architecture. Whether you want to explore its tranquil surroundings or go inside its interior, it will elaborate its marvel.
You can take some beautiful pictures here, walk around in the park, and there are some good cafes in and around the park as well, where you can enjoy your meal.

4. Arbat G street:
Just a 10- to 15-minute walk from Ascension Cathedral is the most famous, touristic, and bustling street in Almaty, known as Arbat G Street. This lively boulevard comes alive, especially at night, presenting a bustling view of nightlife that attracts tourists to experience the vibrant energy of the city. This street offers something for everyone, whether your mood is for people-watching, shopping, or dining at some of the best local or international restaurants.

5. Mega Park Mall:
Our final stop, Mega Park, provides a great shopping and entertainment experience right in the middle of the city. Just a 10-minute walk from Arbat G Street, you will find this mall. This large, stylish mall provides plenty to fulfil every shoppers needs. Whether you are in a mood to shop locally or want to try international brands, you will find all of them here. And there are a lot of options for dining, with a variety of delicious meals waiting for you around every turn.

But the lively atmosphere of the mall is what makes it unique. I was mesmerized and surprised by the vibrant atmosphere during my visit to the mall on a public holiday, with people bustling around and lots of events around, boosting the energy. So, Mega Park never has a dull moment with its participatory activities and cultural performances, which makes it a must-visit place in Almaty for anyone looking for both a bustling atmosphere and the opportunity to do shopping and eat meals all under the same roof.

I find these five places in Almaty to be quite special. But there’s so much more you can see in this city. Among the many things to do in Almaty are the vibrant Green Bazar, the fascinating Museum of Musical Instruments, the beautiful Almaty Central Mosque, and the exotic animals at the Almaty Zoo. Keep in mind that this is the list of my personal top 5 places. You can add other places from the above list, and if you have time, you can visit them all. Almaty offers something for everyone to enjoy, regardless of their interest in history, the outdoors, or trying out new cuisine. Good luck on your trip to Almaty.

(There is another must-do day trip to Kolsai Lake and Charyn Canyon, which you can do in Almaty.) The next blog will be on that day trip.
